Breast Cancer Chemo Care Package

Other Ways You Can Help

What else can you do to offer help and show support? Ulreich says its simple: Be there for them.

We want to encourage patients that they are living with cancer, not dying from it, she says. Encourage patient to live their lives, not sit around letting the cancer take over. If they do, the cancer wins.

Another idea, if a patient is experiencing nausea, is to offer to set up a meal delivery among friends. The smell of food cooking can intensify nausea so preparing a meal and bringing it to the patient can help. An added bonus: food delivery also brings regular company for the patient.

It can be as simple as setting up regular phone calls and lunch dates, or driving them to appointments and picking up medication at the pharmacy.

Most often, Ulreich says, cancer patients just need an extra hand during treatment.

Putting together a chemo kit may feel like a lot of work and maybe even overwhelming in some cases. This is not something you have to do all by yourself. You could make it a group activity with your close friends and family. They may even want to make something special just for you. Gift Ideas For A Patient Undergoing Chemotherapy

What’s In My Chemo Care Bag?

Undergoing chemotherapy can be a very difficult time for both patients and caregivers. Theres no rulebook, no guidelines, no playbook, no how-to manual. We often get asked by our community: What more can I do to help? We like the idea of putting together a homemade personalized care package or gift basket to show your loved one you are thinking of them.

To help get you started, we created a list of items you can include in a customized chemo care package you can gift before, during or after treatment:

    Care After Chemo Treatment

Keep in mind you will likely need some comfort items ready for you when you come home. Some people dont feel their best following treatment, and you may need several of the items you packed up for your chemo kit. Other items that you may need while youre recovering at home include:

    • Plenty of fluids
    • Ginger candies to help with nausea
    • Fragrance-free lotion

    Get To Know Other Patients

In years past, people have often brought a support partner with them to chemo treatments. However, during COVID-19, in order to keep patients safe there are many additional restrictions in place. Therefore, unfortunately, patients are rarely allowed visitors in the treatment area. What weve learned is that many patients reach out for the support of other patients. Consider playing games or simply chatting to other patients going through the same thing you are. That extra support can go a long way to boost morale.

What Is A Chemo Care Bag

If you came across this post in your search engine of choice, you were likely searching for specific information about chemo care packages or chemo care bags.

For those of you who landed here for other reasons, though, I felt a quick explanation would be helpful.

A cancer patient going through chemotherapy may have sides effects like:

    • Appetite changes, nausea, and vomiting
    • Mouth, tongue, and throat problems
    • Nerve problems, such as numbness, tingling, and pain
    • Skin and nail changes such as dry skin and color change
    • Chemo brain, which can affect concentration and focus

So the items in the chemo care package typically include self-care items that assist with the above possible side effects and should help before, during, or after a chemotherapy treatment.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 36, shortly after having my second child. After undergoing a double mastectomy, my medical oncologist recommended really aggressive chemotherapy for further treatment.

I ended up receiving chemotherapy for six months total, including 4 rounds of AC chemo followed by 12 weeks of Taxol. Since each chemo session took about 3-4 hours, I spent quite a lot of time in the infusion center.

The items in the thoughtful gift set I had received turned out to be so helpful in getting me through these long days in the infusion center.

Below, Im including the list of items that proved to be the best gift ideas during the journey through chemo.
