Does Undergoing A Vasectomy Cause Prostate Cancer

The link between prostate cancer and vasectomy is controversial. A 2020 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that undergoing a vasectomy may result in a small increased risk of prostate cancer that persists for at least three decades, regardless of the age at vasectomy. However, other studies have not found this to be true and more research is needed, according to the American Cancer Society.

Can Masturbation Or Frequent Sex Cause Prostate Cancer

Masturbation or frequent sex dont cause prostate cancer. In fact, its possible that frequent ejaculation may lower the risk of prostate cancer, according to a 2016 study of nearly 32,000 men in European Urology. The reasons for this arent fully known, but frequent ejaculation may flush out potentially harmful chemicals in semen, or it could be that frequent ejaculation is a marker for a healthier person.

Masturbation And Prostate Cancer: An Established Link

Whilst the evidence seems persuasive, its by no means categorical. Rather, subsequent studies have confused the picture once more.

A 2008 study, for example, found the opposite that a higher frequency of ejaculation in younger men led to an increased risk of prostate cancer before the age of 60. The numbers here were quite dramatic: compared to men who did it less than once a month, those who masturbated up to 7 times a week had a 79% higher risk of cancer.

The results of these studies do not show a certain link between ejaculation per se and cancer. Instead, frequent masturbation might point to other factors that themselves affect the risk of cancer. For example, men who masturbate more frequently might have higher testosterone, which appears to play a role in the development of prostate cancer.

Masturbation Frequency Linked to Prostate Risk in 20s, Protection in 50s

Jan. 27, 2009 — Frequent masturbation in young men is linked to higher risk of early prostate cancer, but it lowers prostate cancer risk for men in their 50s, a study shows.

High levels of male sex hormones, or androgens, may increase a man’s risk of prostate cancer. But different studies of this question, done in different ways, have reached different conclusions.

To look at the question in a new way, a team of researchers at England’s University of Nottingham looked at whether men with more intense sex drives were at higher risk of prostate cancer.

Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, PhD Rosalind Eeles, PhD, FRCP and Kenneth R. Muir, PhD, obtained detailed sexual histories from 840 men. About half the men got prostate cancer by age 60, and about half did not have cancer.

The findings were surprising. Sexual intercourse did not affect prostate cancer risk. But frequent masturbation did — in different ways, at different times of life.

“Frequent masturbation during men’s 20s and 30s increased their risk of prostate cancer,” Dimitropoulou tells WebMD. “But men in their 50s who masturbated frequently had decreased risk.”

Of course, masturbation frequency is relative.

For men in their 50s, “frequent masturbation” was one or more times per week. Compared to same-age men who reported never masturbating, 50-something frequent masturbators had a 70% lower risk of prostate cancer.

Everything You Need To Know About Your Prostate

08 October 2020

Hey guys, we know that talking about your prostate can be a little uncomfortable. You might not know where or what it is, or you might have only heard about it in stories about older men having difficulty peeing or the doctor sticking their finger up you know where to check on it.

Below, weve got all the details about what your prostate is, where it is and what it does. Well also discuss how it might change as you age, and any changes or symptoms you should keep an eye on and tell your doctor about.

Prostate Specific Antigen Testing

Prostate Specific Antigen is a protein made by the cells in your prostate. Your PSA levels can be measured using a blood test and give an indication of your prostate health.

A PSA test isnt a test for cancer. Higher levels of PSA might indicate prostate cancer, but a high reading could also be caused by other conditions. It is also possible to have low level readings and have prostate cancer. This means that a PSA test isnt enough to definitively diagnose or rule out prostate cancer. Your PSA levels can vary, so your doctor might run this test a few times to compare your results and help determine your risk of prostate cancer.

Best Evidence Yet: Ejaculation Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk

NEW ORLEANS Good news, men: you may be able to decrease your risk for prostate cancer by ejaculating frequently, according to research presented here at American Urological Association 2015 Annual Meeting.

The frothy advice is not new but is now backed up by the “strongest evidence to date” on the subject, according to lead author Jennifer Rider, ScD, MPH, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

“There is no modifiable risk factor for developing prostate cancer,” Dr Rider told Medscape Medical News. “It would be exciting to tell men that there was a way to modify their risk.”

However, she noted that these are observational data and urged caution when “interpreting them.”

The results are “fascinating,” said Jesse Sammon, MD, a urologist at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, who attended Dr Rider’s presentation. “It was the highlight of the session on cancer epidemiology the moderator called it the ‘study most likely to be tweeted’.”

These are “incredibly high-quality data,” said Dr Sammon, who was not involved with the study.

The data come from nearly 32,000 men in the prospective Health Professionals Follow-up Study, who now have been followed for 18 years.

During the study period, 3839 men have been diagnosed with incident prostate cancer, 384 cases of which were lethal.

At ages 40 to 49, men most reported 8 to 12 ejaculations per month only 8.8% reported at least 21 ejaculations per month.

Live Session on Prostate Cancer: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment.

ByLive Science Staff26 January 2009

Editorâs Note:This story was revised Jan. 28, 2008 after an email interview with the studyâs lead author Polyxeni Dimitropoulou to address concerns that this research produced markedly different results than some previous studies on the topic.

A new study finds men who are sexually active in their 20s and 30s are more likely to develop prostate cancer especially if they masturbate frequently.

The message, perhaps: Hold off until middle age.

The study also found that frequent sexual activity in a manâs 40s appears to have little effect and even small levels of sexual activity in a manâs 50s could offer protection from the disease. Most of the differences were attributed to masturbation rather than sexual intercourse.

However, some previous studies had generated much different findings. The bottom line: More study is needed to settle this one.

The study, led by the University of Nottingham, looked at the sexual practices of more than 431 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 60, together with 409 controls who do not have prostate cancer.

Among men with prostate cancer, 34 percent had masturbated frequently in their 20s, compared to 24 percent among the control group. A similar spread was found for men in their 30s.

The results, based on questionnaires, are detailed in the journal BJU International .

Connection Between Ejaculation And Prostate Cancer

The amount of ejaculations included those from sexual intercourse, masturbation and nocturnal emissions . The one study found that men who ejaculated 21 or more time a month had a 33% decreased chance of developing prostate cancer compared to those who ejaculated 4-7 times a month. The second study showed that men who averaged 4-7 ejaculations a week showed a 36% decreased chance of developing prostate cancer, before the age of 70, as compared to men who ejaculated less than 2-3 times a week.

It’s not known how this increased rate of ejaculation leads to a decreased risk of prostate cancer. The theory behind it is that ejaculation expels potentially harmful or irritating substances from the prostate, thereby decreasing the chances of the occurrence of a malignancy.

Ejaculation And Prostate Cancer: Is There A Link

In a 2016 study, researchers examined questionnaires of over 31,000 men who kept track of how many times they ejaculated in a month. The study found that men who reported more than 21 ejaculations per month had roughly a 20% lower risk of prostate cancer than men who had 47 ejaculations a month .

However, the science is far from being settled here, and not every study agrees. A 2004 study didnt find any association between ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer risk. Although there is an interesting twist: the study looked at the same men included in the 2016 study .

Interestingly, these conflicting results dont necessarily disprove a potential link between ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer. The disease is more common in older men, and frequent ejaculation might have reduced their risk of prostate cancer as the study respondents aged.

What We Dont Know

While research is promising, thereâs still a lot scientists need to learn. Some things to consider:

  • Thereâs no proof that ejaculating more actually causes lower chances of prostate cancer. For now, doctors just know theyâre connected. It may be that men who do it more tend to have other healthy habits that are lowering their odds.
  • Ejaculation doesnât seem to protect against the most deadly or advanced types of prostate cancer. Experts donât know why.
  • Scientists donât know if ejaculation during sex vs. masturbation has the same benefits. Some research has found that the makeup of semen is different for each. For example, semen during sex has higher levels of sperm and some chemicals. Itâs possible that these could make a difference in a manâs odds of having prostate cancer.
  • Not all studies have found a benefit. The 2016 study got attention because of its size and length . But some smaller studies have not shown the same good results. A few even found that some men, specifically younger men, who masturbated more had slightly higher chances of prostate cancer. Some researchers wonder if a manâs age may affect whether more ejaculation helps.

Study 2 Sexual Activity And Prostate Cancer Risk In Men Diagnosed At A Younger Age

Can Masturbation Help Prevent Prostate Cancer?

A case-control study at the British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Oncology has collected information from over 800 individuals regarding their sexual activityparticularly how often they masturbated.

It was revealed that frequent masturbation activity is a factor that decreases the risk of prostate cancer in older men.

While the result is inconsistent with men in their 20s, the findings point to the different effects for older men. Somehow, frequent masturbation has a protective effect on the prostate gland, indicating the benefits of masturbation.

Frequent Ejaculation Age And Prostate Cancer Risk

It still remains unclear whether or not ejaculating more often makes males of all ages less likely to develop prostate cancer.

For example, an older found that men who frequently ejaculated when they were younger appeared to have a reduced rate of prostate cancer later in life.

In contrast, a 2009 study found that frequent masturbation might reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men aged 50 and above. However, the same study also suggested that ejaculating more often might increase risk among men in their 20s and 30s.

A more recent 2017 study examined ejaculation frequency and the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. It found that a higher ejaculation frequency in a males 30s was protective. However, it did not see the same effect for frequent ejaculation in a males 20s and 40s.

Masturbation And Prostate Cancer Risks

28 January, 2009By NT Contributor

The Independent has reported that masturbation can be good for the over-50s, claiming it may remove toxins and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. The Sun reported that solo sex during ones younger life might increase the risk of prostate cancer.Brought to you by NHS Choices

These claims are based on research exploring prostate cancer and sex drive, which some suggest are both linked to high levels of male hormones.

The research surveyed 400 men diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 60 and 400 healthy men, asking about sexual habits at various stages of their lives. It was found that frequent masturbation during ones 20s and 30s was associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, while men who masturbated more frequently in their 50s indicated a lowered risk.

This study has a number of limitations, in particular, asking men to accurately recall their sexual habits several decades ago. Also, because sex is a highly personal matter some men may have felt uncomfortable revealing such personal details about their lives, or may have defined sexual activities differently. For these reasons men may have easily over- or underestimated their sexual activity.

Sexual functioning is a normal part of healthy adult life and men should not be overly concerned by this study, as more research is needed in this area.

Whats A Healthy Level Of Masturbation

According to the International Society for Sexual Medicine, there is no normal frequency for masturbation. While some people may masturbate daily, weekly, or monthly, others may choose not to masturbate at all.

As long as it doesnt negatively affect your relationships or interfere with other activities like school or work, masturbating as frequently or infrequently as youd like is safe and healthy.

Masturbation is a healthy, natural, and safe way to practice self-care.

Masturbating may have many benefits for your mind and body. There are typically no harmful side effects.

Feel free to enjoy self-pleasure without guilt or shame. Speak with a therapist or someone you trust about any negative feelings you may have.

Other Causes Of Prostate Cancer

While masturbation and testosterone levels may affect your chances, there are other factors that we know for sure play a role. For example, as with all cancers, older men are much more likely to develop prostate cancer than younger men.

Your genetics are one of the most important risk factors for prostate cancer too. If you have people in your family that have developed prostate cancer, you are more likely to develop it yourself. Interestingly, if people in your family have had breast cancer, your chance of developing prostate cancer is increased too.

Obesity is another risk factor that deserves a mention. One study found that men with obesity were 20% more likely to develop prostate cancer than lean men, whilst those severely obese were 34% more likely. Unfortunately, however, obese men are more likely to develop particularly aggressive forms of prostate cancer too.

What Might Cause Pain In Your Kidneys After Masturbation

If it does not cause kidney problems, why do I get cramps after masturbation?

Human health issues are sometimes very complex, but explaining a symptom can be easier than you thought. As mentioned above, it can result from body posture, not a kidney issue.

What if you have this problem very often? If thats the case, it would be good to talk to your doctor and get a diagnosis. Maybe chronic lower back pain or a muscle spasm in your back can be the answer to your question.
