Sometimes myeloma does not cause any symptoms. It may be found when a blood or urine test is done for another condition and a higher than normal level of protein is found. When more advanced, symptoms of myeloma may include bone pain, especially in the back or ribs bones that break easily fever for no known reason frequent infections bruising or bleeding easily trouble breathing weakness of the arms or legs and feeling very tired.

These symptoms can also come from other conditions. If you have any of them, talk to your doctor.

Low Level Of Platelets

The platelet level may also drop. If it does, you may get nose bleeds, or notice a red rash on your skin like tiny bruises. You may then need to have a platelet transfusion. After high dose chemotherapy, it can take longer for the platelet count to get back to normal than any other blood cell count.

  • Family history, with a sibling or parent who has had the disease increasing its likelihood as much as four times when compared to people without a family history of the disease
  • Personal history of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance , an abnormal line of antibody-producing plasma cells that begin to produce monoclonal antibody proteins

Types Of Blood Cancer

The three main types of blood and bone marrow cancer are leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma:

  • Leukemia is a blood cancer that originates in the blood and bone marrow. It occurs when the body creates too many abnormal white blood cells and interferes with the bone marrows ability to make red blood cells and platelets.
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system from cells called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infections.
  • Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system from cells called lymphocytes. Hodgkin lymphoma is characterized by the presence of an abnormal lymphocyte called the Reed-Sternberg cell.

What Can You Do About Red Blood Cell Count After Chemo And Radiation

Doctors usually offer erythropoietic drugs to stimulate red blood cell production, but there are also things you can do on your own to increase your red blood cell count and your quality of life while going through chemotherapy.

Don’t suffer silently.

Erythropoietic drugs don’t always work very well. It doesn’t do a lot of good to be taking a hormone to increase red blood cell production if your body can’t support the higher hemoglobin levels those red blood cells need. If you don’t feel better as expected, you need blood tests sooner rather than later. Don’t keep on tolerating the symptoms your lowered red blood cell count is inducing, and ask your doctor to test you immediately.

Don’t take iron supplements or eat iron-rich foods unless you know from a blood test that your iron levels are low.

Anemia symptoms are not necessarily iron deficiency signs. It’s possible to have both cancer and hemochromatosis, a condition of high iron levels that causes, among other things, cancer, so you should not try to get extra iron unless you know from a blood test that you are deficient in iron .

How Do Blood Cancers Develop

Blood cancers develop when blood cells arent made properly.

In most blood cancers, the normal cell production is interrupted by uncontrolled growth of an abnormal type of blood cell. This can reduce the bone marrows ability to produce normal levels of other blood cells, which affects the way that the rest of the body works. Meanwhile, the abnormal cells spill out into the bloodstream.

As the abnormal blood cells build up in the blood, they can spread to the lymph glands , spleen, liver, lungs and kidneys. Without treatment, many of the bodys key functions will be increasingly affected.

How Blood Cells Normally Develop

All your blood cells start off as special cells called blood stem cells, which are made in the bone marrow .

Blood stem cells can divide and multiply in the bone marrow to produce many other blood cells. The diagram below shows how blood stem cells can grow into any of the blood cells that are needed, including white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.

Your bone marrow makes a huge number of blood cells every second. If everythings working normally, your body makes the right number of each type of cell to keep you healthy.

If something goes wrong with the process below, blood cancer can occur, and you may get blood cells not developing properly, or multiplying too quickly.

What Are The Causes Of Anemia

Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found inside your larger bones. A hormone from the kidneys, called erythropoietin, tells your body when to make more red blood cells. Damage to either the bone marrow or the kidneys can cause anemia. Anemia can be caused by cancer, cancer side effects, or cancer treatment. It can also be caused by factors unrelated to cancer.

Common causes of anemia in people with cancer include:

Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can damages bone marrow. This damage usually does not last and anemia often improves a few months after chemotherapy ends. Also, chemotherapy with platinum-based drugs may harm the kidneys. These drugs include cisplatin and carboplatin .

Radiation therapy. Radiation therapy to large areas of the body can damage bone marrow. So can radiation therapy to bones in the pelvis, legs, chest, or abdomen.

Certain types of cancer. Leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma damage bone marrow. Also, cancer that spreads to the bone or bone marrow may crowd out healthy red blood cells.

Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Nausea and vomiting and loss of appetite may cause you to lose nutrients. Your body needs nutrients to make red blood cells. These includes iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid.

Too much blood loss. You can lose red blood cells faster than your body can make them. This may happen after surgery or if a tumor causes bleeding inside your body.

Low Level Of White Blood Cells

The level of white cell counts goes down first because many white cells naturally die off within a few days. Usually, these get replaced by new white blood cells , but cancer drugs may kill some of the developing cells.

It usually takes a week or 2 for the bone marrow to make more cells and release them back into the blood.

A drop in white blood cells can lead to an increased risk of infection.

Consequences Of Cancer Treatment

If you have severe anemia, you may have to delay your cancer treatment or reduce your dose until your anemia is better managed. Anemia can cause weakness and also make some cancer treatments less effective.

Your doctor will evaluate your best course of treatment to minimize possible complications caused by cancer treatment while you have anemia.

  • For people assigned male at birth, 4.7 million to 6.1 million red blood cells per microliter of blood.

Cancers Stage Affects Survival And Prognosis

The cancers stage plays a big role in your prognosis, or your chance of recovery. According to the National Cancer Institute SEER Program, the average five-year relative survival rate for multiple myeloma between 2010 and 2016 was about 54 percentmeaning about 54 percent of the people diagnosed with multiple myeloma at any stage are alive five years after their diagnosis.

That survival rate changes a bit based on how far the cancer has spread. This is classified in two ways for multiple myeloma:

  • Localizedonly one tumor is growing inside or outside the bone, what we defined above as a plasmacytoma. The five-year survival rate for localized multiple myeloma is about 75 percent.
  • Distantmultiple tumors are found inside or outside the bones, a classic multiple myeloma. The five-year survival rate for distant multiple myeloma is lowerabout 53 percent.

Unfortunately, 95 percent of multiple myeloma cases are diagnosed at the distant stage, after it has metastasized.

Theres at least some good news on the horizonthe five-year survival rate has been improving, from around 35 percent in 2000 to 56.5 percent in 2012.
