Recently, someone I love was diagnosed with Cancer and told they will need to go through Chemotherapy. So often when loved ones get a diagnosis like this its easy to feel overwhelmed. What can we possibly say or do to help?

While I dont have any magic answers, Ive found it helps me to cope if I can find a way to be helpful to the person who is sick, even if it is in just a very small way. Thats how the idea for this Chemo Care Basket Came about.

Below, is what was included in the Chemotherapy Gift Basket I made hopefully it gives you some ideas. That said, you could include so many other helpful items! So, feel free to be guided by your knowledge of the gift recipient and your own intuition as well!

Putting together a Chemotherapy Gift Basket-

  • A Tumbler that has a Lid, and a StrawThis is helpful for drinking when the person is laying down. The lid and straw keep the beverage from spilling when the person takes a sip from bed.
  • Hard Candy to SuckGinger hard candy can help with the nausea Chemo can cause, and flavored hard candy can help with the metallic taste chemo can sometimes leave in the mouth.
  • Fuzzy socks or ThrowWhen the person is actually receiving Chemo they can get a chill, and feel extra cold. So a fuzzy throw, hat or socks can help them stay cozy during treatments.

Gifts For Someone With Cancer: Encourage Their Faith

    32. New Bible

A Bible can be a really special gift for somone with cancer, especially if you put a handwritten note on the inside cover. Another idea is to highlight Bible verses about hope and healing.

    33. Worship songs

It’s not as easy to gift music these days, but you can always get your friend a gift card to a streaming music service like Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music or Pandora . Or, if you are looking for a quick, free way to encourage them with music, send texts with links to YouTube videos with inspirational and encouraging songs.

    34. Devotionals

Sometimes patients need short, quick things to read that will inspire them and boost their faith. There’s a devotional for everything these daysmen, women, cancer patients, caregivers, dog lovers, chocolate lovers and more. One great devotional to consider is The Waiting Room and if it’s Christmastime, check out my devotional, Unexpected.

    Personalized Coupons Offering Help

Sometimes, a great gift isn’t material. Your friend might need something you can do rather than buy.

Personalized gift certificates or coupons are endearing. They can come in handy when your friend isnt feeling 100%. Just be sure to make gift certificates specific.

For example, you could design and print a coupon your friend can redeem for:

    • A day of housecleaning
    • A night of home cooking
    • A week of grocery shopping
    • Taking the kids for a day

Something like “one hour of help” is too vague. This is more likely to result in the gift certificate going to waste.

Your friend may need help with certain things, but may not think or want to ask for it. For example:

    • Washing windows
    • Cooking a child’s favorite meal

Cancer-related decisions like treatment, symptom management, and day-to-day living with cancer can feel overwhelming. Specific coupons can help provide welcome relief.

    16. Dried fruit like prunes and dates to ease constipation.

    17. Moist Flushable Cleansing Wipes dry toilette paper can be irritating.

    Journals Or Sketchbooks And Pens

Sometimes men from older generations have a hard time expressing themselves. Communication doesnt always come easy, especially during emotionally fraught times. If your dad is going through cancer treatment, he may need an emotional outlet.

If he is a natural storyteller, encourage him to start keeping a journal, like this simple, blank hard cover journal. He can revisit old memories or document his experiences during treatment. If hes more visual, a sketchbook, like this set of two,may help him process his feelings.

Hi, my dad starts chemo 1st June.. I’ve done a care package from hits I’ve read online but wondered if anyone whose been through it has anything else that they swear by for recovery to help afterwards xx For my pops and his wife supporting him too x

    Hey Gems13,

My boss went through Chemo and we did a care package from a company that made things specifically for people going through it because they themselves had experienced chemo.

There is a fantastic website called ‘Not Another Bunch of Flowers’ that won me over because i knew even from the name of the site that this would be perfect for her.

    Fab thank you xx

Hope everything goes well for you all x

OH just finished 4 rounds of chemo/immunotherapy and about to go onto maintenance immunotherapy only

Best thing we did was buy a diary – we got a week over two pages

An old fashioned write in everyday, and it’s a great record of day to day side effects, temperature , sleep pattern /bowel patterns etc

Also useful when consultation coming up as easy to go thru and see what issues happened incase he forgets

Means if he’s having a particular bad day, I can look back and say “this is the same as last time, but you should be fine by Monday”. You really can see the patterns emerging

Immodium, Senna and anti histamines too

    Hope all goes well

    Practical Gifts For Chemo Patients

Below is the list of the most useful items to see your loved ones through chemotherapy. All of these make great gifts for chemo patients. If youre looking for chemo basket ideas, the gifts in this list are the most essential.

    Comfort gifts for chemo patients

    • A fluffy warm blanket These are highly sought out and appreciated by chemo patients. The chemo blankets most hospitals provide are often thin and insufficient. The patient will appreciate a warmer, bigger blanket. Patients commonly take these blankets with them to chemo for added comfort. Click chemo blankets to have a look at some good examples! This is a set that also has other items which are recommended in this article.
    • Food Delivery gift cards from UberEats or similar services. Chemotherapy can be taxing on the body and the patients may feel exhausted most of the day, so having discount cards for food delivery services can be extremely beneficial. Patients on chemo feel cravings for certain foods while other foods make them feel nauseous. Thus, its great for allowing them to pick from a restaurant of their choice and having it delivered to them so they dont have to leave the bed. More about food-related gifts can be found in the section below.
    • Books, Puzzles These can keep loved ones occupied.
    • A small portable metal fan These are highly useful as cancer patients often get hot flashes due to chemo. Make sure its a quiet fan so the patient can leave it on at night while sleeping.
