How Long Does Fluid Retention Last After Chemo

What To Look For

A Day In The Life Of A Cancer Patient | Chemotherapy Infusion

The good news is that you can tell if you’re beginning to retain fluid merely by getting on the scale. “Weight change is the earliest sign of a problem with fluid balance. Most people will retain 8 to 15 pounds of excess fluid before they see leg and belly swelling. However, symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath, loose stools, nausea and feeling full when without eating much may develop at the 5-to-7 pound mark” says Dr. Lewis. He instructs his patients to take action as soon as they notice their weight going up. “Don’t wait until you don’t feel well, you may have gained 5 or more pounds by then and could be well on your way to a serious problem.”

Preparing For Lasting Side Effects

As chemotherapy destroys cancer cells, it also harms healthy cells. This includes cells in your digestive system and hair, along with cells that produce blood.

In turn, chemo can cause various side effects. Some side effects go away quickly, while other side effects can last longer than the actual treatment. These effects can last months or years.

This means that chemotherapy can technically take much longer beyond the treatment itself. Heres what you can do to prepare for these side effects in the long term:

Can Cardiotoxicity Be Reversed

Cardiotoxicity may be reversible. Research has shown that cardiotoxicity that arises after using trastuzumab may be reversible. Cardiotoxicity that arises from anthracycline use is often not reversible and requires long-term treatment. Cardiotoxicity related to chest radiation is also very difficult to reverse and may require long-term treatment, possibly even surgery.

Oedema Clinics Provides Specialised Physiotherapy For Individuals Undergoing Or Recovering From Cancer Treatment To Regain Normal Activity Quickly And To Improve Quality Of Life

What is Oedema and why is it important in cancer treatment?

Oedema is swelling caused by the abnormal buildup of fluid in the body or a part of the body. The fluid collects under the skin within the soft tissues and can remain causing other symptoms such as pain, numbness and skin changes. Normally the lymphatic system carries the fluid away from the tissues, back to the blood. Oedema can occur at many stages in the treatment of cancer for a variety of reasons, depending on the treatment and individual patient differences.

Relieving side effects is an important part of cancer care and treatment, and is especially important with oedema. It is important to talk with your health care team about any swelling you experience, including any new swelling or a change in the amount of swelling experienced.

Patients undergoing chemotherapy may experience swelling as some chemotherapy drugs can cause fluid retention in the body. This form of cancer swelling is most noticeable in the feet, ankles, hands, and face.

Sometimes oedema resulting from cancer treatment, in particular surgery and/or radiation oncology, can be a indication that the lymphatic system has been damaged and could lead to potential long-term continued swelling. This condition is known as Lymphoedema and requires specialised, individual therapy such as the Oedema Clinics therapists provide.

What Are Second Cancers

Advances in early detection and treatment mean that more and more people are surviving cancer today. Cancer survivors can be affected by a number of health problems, but often their greatest concern is facing cancer again. If cancer comes back after treatment, it is called a “recurrence”. Some cancer survivors may develop a new, unrelated cancer later, known as a “second cancer”. No matter what type of cancer you have had, it is still possible to get another cancer, even after surviving the first. Some types of chemotherapy may cause a second cancer years later. Ask your doctor or nurse about your chances of developing second cancer.

Is Fluid In The Knee Normal After Surgery

As you heal from surgery, you may occasionally feel water in your knee and hear a gurgling sound when you bend it. Because of leftover irrigation solution from surgery, your body absorbs it over time.

Total knee replacement is regarded as one of the most successful surgeries in medicine. The most common type of knee joint replacement surgery is arthritis of the knee joint. To recreate the motion and alignment of a natural joint, the prosthetic joint serves as a kind of simulate joint. Excess fluid accumulates in the tissues, swelling occurs as a result. It is possible that swelling after knee replacement surgery is the result of a serious pathology such as infection or deep vein thrombosis. Icing has an impact on blood vessel narrowing and fluid outflow in the region. It is advised to raise your leg slightly above your heart rate for this treatment.

As a result of elevation, the fluid from the legs is more easily able to flow back to the body. It is caused by inflammation and fluid formation as a result of bacteria, which causes infection. In addition to blood and radiological tests, the prosthetic joint is required to undergo revision surgery. If you are experiencing swelling after knee replacement surgery, consult your surgeon.

How To Take Docetaxel

Docetaxel is given by intravenous infusion, usually over an hour. The dosage and schedule are determined by the person’s size and type of cancer. It can be given alone or with other drugs. You will be given a corticosteroid prior to the infusion to prevent severe fluid retention and allergic reactions. The steroid is given in pill form or by IV, which will be determined by your healthcare provider.

This medication contains alcohol and may cause intoxication. You should not drive after the infusion until you know how it will affect you.

Grapefruit can change how your body absorbs this medication. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice during the 2 days before, the day of, and two days after each dose.

This medication can cause severe side effects if given to a patient whose liver function is abnormal. Your labs will be closely monitored prior to each dose of docetaxel and the dose may be decreased or held if your liver function is not normal.

Even when carefully and correctly administered by trained personnel, this drug may cause a feeling of burning and pain. There is a risk that this medication may leak out of the vein at the injection site, resulting in tissue damage that can be severe. If the area of injection becomes red, swollen, or painful at any time during or after the injection, notify your care team immediately. Do not apply anything to the site unless instructed by your care team.

Less Common Side Effects

Changes in heart rate and blood pressure

Docetaxel can alter your heart rate and affect blood pressure so you will be carefully monitored for this during your treatment. Changes to your heart rate and blood pressure can usually be treated easily and you will not have to stop your treatment. This is not the same as having an allergic reaction to docetaxel .

Effects on the lungs

This may include scarring or inflammation of the lung tissue. This is a rare side effect, but if you become breathless or develop a dry cough during or in the few weeks after your treatment, let your treatment team know.

How Long After Chemo Does Your Body Get Back To Normal

There is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to a timeframe. Everyone is different and the amount of time you spend recovering depends on multiple factors.

Even though theres not set amount of time to fixate on, theres a lot you can do to help yourself move forward:

Self-Nourishment Much like food feeds your body, experiences feed your soul. Its important to give yourself exactly what you need at any given time. Want to take that nap you used to feel guilty about? Go for it! Read new books, listen to new music, pay attention to your needs, and most of all enjoy yourself.

Socialize You might be feeling a bit low after treatment has been completed, which is common. Surround yourself with a solid support system this can come in the form of family, friends, or an actual support group. Joining a group with other survivors will help forge a connection with others who have had similar experiences.

Set Goals Your survival gives you a second chance at life a chance to focus on what truly matters most to you. This could be as small as writing in a journal every day or walking every morning, or as large as starting your own business out of your home. Whatever the case may be, setting goals for yourself will feel you with an overwhelming sense of positivity and accomplishment.

Symptoms Of Alcohol Intoxication

In June 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned that docetaxel contains alcohol, which can cause patients to feel drunk after treatment. The agency revised the drugs label to include warnings about the risk.

Docetaxel manufacturers use alcohol, also known as ethanol, to dissolve the active ingredients so the drug can be given intravenously. Different brand-name products contain varying amounts of alcohol.

Patients should not drive or operate machinery for one to two hours after their infusions. Pain relievers, sleep aids and other medications may interact with the alcohol in the infusion and make the intoxicating effects worse.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking and if you have problems with alcohol or other conditions that may be affected by ethanol in docetaxel.

The FDA advises doctors and nurses to monitor patients for signs of being drunk during and after treatment. Let your doctor know if you experience symptoms of being drunk, confusion, stumbling or becoming very sleepy during or after an infusion. Lowering the infusion rate may help resolve the symptoms.

Fluid Retention: What It Can Mean For Your Heart

Fluid buildup indicates worsening heart failure. Learn how to spot it and treat it early.

The buildup of excess fluid in your body can take a variety of forms from belly bloating and swollen ankles to nausea, persistent coughing and fatigue. You may be tempted initially to dismiss this hodgepodge of problems as having little to do with your heart. However, they all signal water retention, which can mean trouble for people with a history of heart failure.

“Fluid buildup can quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation,” says Dr. Eldrin Lewis, a heart failure specialist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Heart failure may start with injury from a heart attack or develop as a result of damaged valves, infection or disease of the heart muscle cells. Many times, it is the product of years of toil against high blood pressure and clogged arteries. Regardless of what triggers the decline, heart failure culminates in a progressive weakening of your heart’s power to pump.

Consequently, blood circulates through your heart and body more slowly your cells thirst for fresh oxygen and nutrients. To compensate for its weakened state, the heart undergoes a series of structural transformations. Other physical processes also come into play. When the kidneys detect the diminished blood flow, they activate hormones that prompt the body to retain fluid and sodium in an effort to boost the volume of blood in circulation.
