How To Know If I Have Lung Cancer

What Can I Expect If I Have Lung Cancer

How to Spot Lung Cancer Early | Cancer Research UK

What to expect after a lung cancer diagnosis depends on many factors. For some with early stage cancer, your provider will remove the cancer and youll need follow up screenings for several years. For many others, its a process that evolves over time. It may mean doing one type of treatment until it stops being effective, then moving on to another type.

The Signs Of Lung Cancer Can Be Easy To Overlook

One of the biggest problems with lung cancer is that the disease is often asymptomatic in its early stages when its easiest to treat, says John Lazar, M.D., a thoracic surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Usually by the time symptoms arise, the cancer is more advanced and may have even spread to other areas of the body. However, some people can experience symptoms earlier.

Among the most common are cough, chest pain and shortness of breath, Eng says. Fatigue, wheezing and unexplained weight loss are a few others.

The hard part: These symptoms can signal a wide range of health problems. Chest pain, for example, is commonly associated with cardiac issues. A cough could point to a respiratory bug.

The average person who has a little cough, theyre not going to automatically think of lung cancer, and same thing in our patients who have a little bit of shortness of breath, Eng says. At the same time, screening every person who is feeling crummy with these common symptoms probably isnt going to be fruitful either, she adds.

Her advice: If you have a new cough that lingers its been around for several weeks and isnt getting better with other treatments, such as antibiotics talk to your doctor about getting further testing. The same goes for shortness of breath. One caveat is if youre coughing up blood. No need to wait on that one see your doctor right away.

Msks Screening Guidelines For Lung Cancer

MSK follows the latest recommendation for lung cancer screening from the United States Preventive Services Task Force. The type of screening you have and your screening schedule are based on your personal risk for lung cancer.

MSK recommendsyou get screened every year if you are between the ages of 50 and 80 and:

  • Smoke now or quit smoking within the past 15 years.
  • Have smoked an average of 1 pack a day for 20 years or what comes out as the same number of cigarettes. For example, you could have smoked 2 packs a day for 10 years or a half pack a day for 40 years.

MSK generally recommends that you do not get screened if you have a disease or illness so severe that it would be very hard for you to have more testing and treatment.

I Thought It Was Walking Pneumonia

Before her advanced lung cancer diagnosis, Beth had mysterious respiratory symptoms, and a stubborn walking pneumonia that hadnt responded to antibiotics or steroids.

Jennifer was feeling terribly run down and getting very winded from normal activities in spite of being fit and athletic. I was coughing, having trouble catching my breath, and experiencing some mild wheezing. These symptoms led me to my primary care physician, and when I didnt feel better on antibiotics within a few days, she ordered a chest x-ray. On a busy Saturday, I let my husband Andy manage our kids sports schedules and walked myself into the emergency department, expecting a case of walking pneumonia or bronchitis. Nothing could have surprised me more that day than to learn that I have Stage IV metastatic lung cancer.

Q: How Do I Tell Someone That I Have Lung Cancer

A: It is hard to know where to begin. Thinking about sharing the news with your loved ones, friends and even your employer can be overwhelming. It is important to remember: There is no right or wrong way. You have to share the news in a way that is most comfortable for you. It certainly would be more convenient if there were a one-size-fits-all approach to telling people about your lung cancer. Just as your relationships are different, the experiences you having discussing your lung cancer will be different.

Spouse or Partner:

  • Tell your partner in a private place.
  • Anticipate a strong emotional reaction.
  • Your partner will probably be shocked initially. The shock will wear off and your partner will most likely want to support you in any way possible.
  • Tell your partner what you need. No one is a mind reader and your needs will change over time and over the course of your lung cancer treatment. Not clearly expressing your needs can lead to frustration felt by both you and your spouse or partner. Remember, your partner probably has never been in your situation before. He or she needs guidance to know how to best support you.

Lung Changes That Show On An X

Sometimes doctors might find some unusual changes on your chest x-ray. Your doctor might have arranged an x-ray for other reasons and you might not have any symptoms.

Changes on a chest x-ray dont always mean that you have lung cancer. There can be other causes, such as an infection. But your doctor might arrange other tests to look further at the changes.

Molecular Tests For Gene Changes

In some cases, especially for non-small cell lung cancer , doctors may test for specific gene changes in the cancer cells that could mean certain targeted drugs might help treat the cancer. For example:

These molecular tests can be done on tissue taken during a biopsy or surgery for lung cancer. If the biopsy sample is too small and all the molecular tests cannot be done, the testing may also be done on blood that is taken from a vein just like a regular blood draw. This blood contains the DNA from dead tumor cells found in the bloodstream of people with advanced lung cancer. Obtaining the tumor DNA through a blood draw is sometimes called a liquid biopsyand can have advantages over a standard needle biopsy, which can carry risks like a pneumothorax and shortness of breath.

Early Warning Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer

Most lung cancers don’t cause symptoms until the disease has advanced, in part because the lungs have few nerve endings. When lung cancer does cause signs in its early stages, they may vary from person to person. However, lung cancer symptoms may include:

  • A new cough that is persistent or worsens, or a change in an existing chronic cough
  • Cough that produces blood

Less common symptoms of lung cancer may include:

  • Swelling in the face or neck
  • Difficulty swallowing or pain while swallowing
  • Changes in the appearance of fingers, called finger clubbing

Although most of these symptoms are more likely to be caused by something other than lung cancer, it’s important to see a doctor. Discovering lung cancer early may mean more treatment options are available.

How Is Lung Cancer Diagnosed

Your health care provider may use many tools to make a diagnosis:

  • A medical history, which includes asking about your symptoms
  • A family history
  • Imaging tests, such as a chest x-ray or chest CT scan
  • Lab tests, including tests of your blood and sputum
  • A biopsy of the lung

If you do have lung cancer, your provider will do other tests to find out how far it has spread through the lungs, lymph nodes, and the rest of the body. This is called staging. Knowing the type and stage of lung cancer you have helps your provider decide what kind of treatment you need.

Symptoms and the results of certain tests may strongly suggest that a person has lung cancer, but the actual diagnosis is made by looking at lung cells in the lab.

Here Are Some Points To Consider When Telling People About Your Lung Cancer:

    • Sometimes having a family member tell people you have lung cancer is easier and less stressful.
    • Expect different reactions. People may not react the way you anticipate or think they “should react.” People have different ways of processing the stressful news. Some people may want to help and others will not offer right away. This doesn’t mean they don’t care. It is their way of coping with your news.
    • Think about how much you want to share and what topics are too sensitive for you to talk about. If people say things or bring up topics that bother you, be ready to tell them you prefer to talk about something else.
    • People often want to help but they don’t know how. Be clear about what support you need. Maybe you just need someone to listen or maybe you need something more specific like help cleaning your house or cooking meals.
    • Because this is such a stressful and emotional time, it can be helpful to work with outside sources such as a counselor, spiritual advisor, psychologist, pediatrician or a social worker to get extra lung cancer support.

Because lung cancer develops in the lungs, as youd probably expect, its most common symptoms involve the lungs. Persistent coughing, coughing up blood or excess mucus, shortness of breath, and chest pain are all common signs of lung cancer. The presence of these symptoms doesnt definitively mean you have lung cancer, though, as they can also be caused by other conditions. Thats why its important to be evaluated by your doctor sooner rather than later.

    Extreme Thirst And Frequent Urination

Thirst is common with the sudden onset of warmer weather, but sudden extreme thirst is a symptom that you should always discuss with your doctor. Some lung cancer tumors create a protein that acts very similar to the parathyroid hormone produced by the parathyroid gland. The parathyroid gland and kidneys normally regulate calcium levels in the body.

Cancer tumors can disrupt the process of regulating calcium, and lead to too much calcium in the bloodstream. Having a higher than usual level of calcium in the blood is called hypercalcemia, and about 10% to 20% of people with cancer develop hypercalcemia. High calcium levels are associated with being thirst and frequent urination.

    What Is The Long

SCLC is a very aggressive form of cancer that often goes undiagnosed until its more advanced, so the survival rate tends to be low.

However, if the cancer is detected in its early stages, the chances of making a recovery are much higher.

Talk with your doctor and treatment team about the details of your cancer and the treatment options that are best for you. Each person is different, and your treatment will be tailored to fit your needs.

SCLC is usually asymptomatic, which means it doesnt cause symptoms. Once symptoms do appear, it often indicates that the cancer has reached other parts of the body.

The severity of symptoms usually increases with increased cancer growth and spread.

    Symptoms may include:

    • bloody mucus from the lungs
    • shortness of breath
    • a persistent cough or hoarseness
    • a loss of appetite
    • facial swelling
