Symptoms Of Childhood Cancers
Top 5 Warning Signs of Pediatric Cancer
Cancers in children are sometimes hard to recognize because common illnesses or everyday bumps and bruises can mask the early warning signs.
Early signs of pediatric cancer are sometimes hard to spot, since childhood is filled with common illnesses and injuries. Keep up with your childs well visits and get medical attention for symptoms that dont go away, including:
- An unusual lump or swelling
- Unexplained changes in skin color, such as paleness
- Ongoing pain in one area
- Frequent headaches, often with vomiting
- Sudden eye or vision changes
- Sudden unexplained weight loss
Types Of Late Effects Of Childhood Cancer
These are potential late effects of childhood cancer:
Emotional problems. Long-term emotional effects may include anxiety, depression, and fear of the cancer coming back. Some survivors avoid health care because of difficult memories and emotions. However, this can harm their health as an adult.
Second cancers. Some survivors have a higher risk of a second cancer. This is a different type of cancer that happens after the first cancer diagnosis.
Common second cancers include skin, breast, and thyroid cancers. Radiation therapy and some types of chemotherapy have the strongest links to second cancers. Drugs with links to second cancers include:

Reproductive and sexual development problems. Both boys and girls have a higher risk of these problems after certain cancer treatments.
Infertility is one potential side effect. For men, infertility means not being able to father a child. In boys, these treatments may cause infertility:
Radiation therapy to the lower abdomen, pelvis, or testicles
Chemotherapy with drugs called alkylating agents, which include cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide
These treatments may also change levels of a male hormone called testosterone. This can affect puberty and sexual functioning. Learn more about fertility concerns and cancer treatment for men.
For women, infertility means not being able to conceive a child or maintain a pregnancy.

Childhood Cancer Working Group
PAHO, together with UICC, governments, and academia convene to discuss strategies to reduce inequities and increase access to childhood cancer care in Latin America and the Caribbean. Improving access to care for children with cancer and reducing the inequities associated with outcomes for children with cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean is the main goal of PAHO’s Childhood Cancer Working Group. The group, formed in 2017 on the heals of a policy dialogue by the Union for International Cancer Control , gathered the leading pediatric oncologists from public health institutions in LAC, as well as representatives from Canada’s Hospital for Sick Children, the University of Chile, the University of West Indies and UICC.

How Do We Put Health Information Into Action
There is a plethora of nutrition articles in the media and online providing information as to which foods are bad or good for you. Despite the benefits of good nutrition being widely published in lay and medical literature, there is little consensus on how nutrition can be included and implemented within prevention strategies. These strategies could help give nutritional advice to parents, support schools in educating our children, help reach out to health care providers and the general population.
The present focus of cancer control, however, is mainly on early diagnosis and treatment and not on trying to prevent cancer in the first place. Furthermore, the vital importance of nutrition is often overlooked.
Many countries do not have public health policies that ensure adequate and appropriate nutrition for the population. The consumption of junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages is a scourge on our society and a main contributor to obesity, which is a risk factor for cancer and other NCDs.
Hamers Shocking Discovery Of Cancer
Ryke Geerd Hamer was a German doctor that worked at a cancer clinic in Munich, Germany. One day he learned that some lunatic killed his son Dirk Hamer. This revelation came as a shock for him. Soon after the incident, he developed testicular cancer.
Dr. Hamer wondered if his testicular diagnosis had anything to do with his recent trauma. He interviewed his cancer patients and did brain CT-scans.
Hamer then analyzed his findings and found something incredible. He discovered that every cancer patient experienced something shocking before their cancer diagnosis.
Cancer manifests after a conflict shock
Hamer found out that our trauma affects the brain, the psyche, and the organ at the same time. Illnesses are not mistakes by the body but rather survival mechanisms.
Every disease has a biological conflict. A biological conflict is a specific program the body uses to deal with a stressful event.
We call this process the fight or flight mode. The body releases stress hormones and other chemicals so that you can escape from the danger. When youre safe, the survival program stops and the body goes back to normal.
Our bodies cant see the difference between a real situation and an imagined one. So the same program will run whether you believe it or experience it first hand.
Hamer also learned that diseases run in two phases. The first stage is the conflict-active stage.

How Does Stem Cell Transplant Help In Blood Cancer Treatment
For a stem cell transplant, blood stem cells from a healthy matching donor are required. Only about 30% of the patients in need of a blood stem cell transplant can find a sibling match. The rest 70% depend on finding a matching unrelated donor. When blood stem cells are collected from a donor, they are infused into the patient through a transplant process which then moves through the bloodstream and settles in the bone marrow. These new blood stem cells begin to increase in numbers and produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, resulting in the replacement of the patients diseased cells.

How Stress Manifests Cancer
Few people acknowledge the link between stress and diseases. Most cancers appear after a lot of stress. The idea that stress can manifest diseases seems farfetched if you dont know how the universe works.
Our world might feel solid, but that is an illusion. If you zoom in on your hand with a powerful microscope, you can see molecules and atoms.
If you get even closer, you will notice that all matter is energy vibrating at different frequencies. There is no solidity. Everything in the universe is energy even your thoughts, and feelings.
All matter is energy vibrating at different frequencies
Our bodies are energy fields that operate well when the energy flow is high. The highest vibration is love and the lowest one is shame. When we have emotional stress, we work on lower frequencies that distort the body.
Chinese medicine calls the energy that flows in our bodies, Chi. When we worry or feel anger, we hinder the flow of chi and create diseases in our bodies.
One man that figured out the whole emotional connection to cancer was Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer.
Treatment Of Childhood Blood Cancer
One of the biggest challenges in controlling blood cancer in India is lack of awareness and misinformation. Most people are unaware of blood cancer and its possible treatments. They dont know that stem cell transplant is the best treatment option that can save the life of the patient. The mainstay of treatment for childhood blood cancer or Leukemia is chemotherapy, although, in high-risk cases or in children who cannot be treated with chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant is their only chance at survival.

Problems With Development In The Womb
Some childhood cancers such as Wilms tumours and retinoblastomas begin when the baby is still inside their mother.
When a baby is growing in the womb , many parts of the body, such as the kidneys and eyes, develop very early on. Sometimes something goes wrong and some of the cells that should have turned into developed cells to form a part of the body dont. Instead they remain as very early cells.
Usually, these immature cells don’t cause any problems and mature by themselves by the time the child is 3 or 4 years old. But if they dont, they may begin to grow out of control and develop into a cancerous tumour.
Protect Your Child From Developing Cancer As An Adult
Lifestyle choices play the biggest role in the development of cancer, with only two percent of cancer caused by environmental carcinogens in the U.S. As parents, we can teach our family healthy habits that may help reduce cancer risk over a lifetime. Some of these habits include:
1. Inspire healthy eating habits for the entire family
- Encourage a diet that is full of fruits and vegetables. At least one and a half to two cups a day.
- Use lean sources of protein, such as skinless chicken, turkey fish and soy, when you cook at home and when you eat at a restaurant.
- Limit the amount of soda your child drinks.
- Avoid or limit fast food meals and meats that are over-processed, such as hot dogs.
My fellow RN Remedies blogger, Tere Jones, talks about the health benefits of fruits and vegetables here.
2. Use sunscreen on a daily basis. Protecting skin from the sun will reduce skin cancer risks.
- Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor 15 or higher.
- Apply daily when your child will be outdoors.
- Choose broad spectrum UVA/UVB coverage.
- Use hats and sunglasses in addition to sunscreen.
My fellow RN Remedies blogger, Megan Summers, talks more about sunscreen tips here.
3. Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity increases the risk of many cancers.
4. Avoid cigarette smoke. Your child is still exposed to the dangers of cigarette smoke, even if you smoke outside.

Easy Ways To Prevent Childhood Cancer
More than 9000 kids get cancer in the US every year . The most common are leukemias, lymphomas, and brain tumors, but there are many different kinds. If you would like up to date numbers, the AAP has them here.
Cancer is a group of more than 100 diseases caused by the cells in a persons body multiplying out of control. Cancer is separated into different types depending on what sort of cell it originated from and if it invaded nearby body parts or spread to other organs . That might be a smidge simplified, but you get the idea.
Your childrens genes, the DNA they inherit from you, influence their risk of cancernot something you can change. But lifestyle and environment also influence their risk, and there you can have an impact.
That impact includes not only your kids exposures in childhood, but also the example they see in your behavior and the habits you establish that will carry forward into their adult lives. What you teach them in childhood can protect them throughout their lives.

Can Childhood Cancers Be Prevented
Unlike many cancers of adults, lifestyle-related risk factors don’t play much of a role in a childs risk of getting cancer. A few environmental factors, such as radiation exposure, have been linked with an increased risk of some childhood cancers. But in some cases exposure to radiation might be unavoidable, such as if the child needs radiation therapy to treat another cancer.
If your child does develop cancer, it’s important to know that it’s extremely unlikely there is anything you or your child could have done to prevent it.
Very rarely, a child might inherit gene changes that make them very likely to get a certain kind of cancer. In such cases, doctors may sometimes recommend preventive surgery to remove an organ before cancer has a chance to develop there. But again, this is very rare.

Guiding and educating our children to enjoy and maintain healthy eating and exercise habits from a very young age is one way to protect them from cancer in the future.
Scientific evidence shows that there is a relationship between overweight and obesity in children and cancers of the esophagus, kidneys, endometrium, pancreas, breast and gastrointestinal system.
Still little is known about this link. Avoiding excess body weight in childhood could prevent new cases of cancer, according to experts from the World Health Organization . It is estimated that about 22 million children under the age of five are overweight or obese in the world, due to multiple factors related to diet and sedentary lifestyle.
That is why it is insisted that good eating habits be adopted, the intake of fruits and vegetables, and that the child practices physical exercises or sports. Families, as well as schools, play an important role in controlling the little ones.

How Kids With Cancer Feel About Their Situation
Many parents don’t realize how important it is for children to be around their parents in times of need. The Children Cancer Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan examined 78 childrenaged 7-12 with cancer. The participants made drawings of themselves and others.
Most children with cancer have low self-esteem and feel lonely
This study sought to explore the self-perception of children. The researchers looked into facial expressions and family ties. Emotions expressed in facial expressions were sadness, seriousness, anger, and pain.
Most of the children’s drawings reflected their isolation from their family members. The pictures of themselves showed that they had low self-esteem.

Avoid Unnecessary And Dangerous Prescriptions
This sort of goes hand in hand with the above. A friend of mine is experiencing hair loss. After a visit with her doctor, she walked out with a prescription for Xanax. Why? Unfortunately, sometimes doctors prescribe prescription drugs that can do more harm than good.
A surprising number of other prescription medications have warnings in their labels about cancer. For example, the popular heartburn medicine omeprazole causes abnormal cell growth and stomach tumors in rats. No one seems to know whether this constitutes a problem for people. Spironolactone is a blood pressure medicine that is sometimes prescribed for hormonal imbalances and facial hair growth in women. It causes tumors in rats. Parents of children with eczema have been worried by reports that the prescription topical skin treatments, Elidel cream and Protopic ointment, are associated with lymphoma and skin cancer. The FDA has warned against using these drugs in children under two years of age. It also states that, The long term safety of Elidel and Protopic are unknown.
Let me reiterate that of course, we cannot prevent all cases of cancer. Even if you do everything right. Cancer is no ones fault. The best we can do is try to prevent it by living a healthy, non-toxic lifestyle.
