When choosing a radiation shielding material it is important to keep a few things in mind. Gamma radiation is best shielded by materials with a high density. Most common materials to shield gamma radiation are lead and tungsten. Differences between lead and tungsten radiation shielding are:
- Tungsten is much more expensive than lead
- Casting of tungsten is not possible, while lead can be casted
- Lead is soft, making it more vulnerable
- Thin pieces of tungsten break easily
- Less tungsten is needed to provide a certain attenuation
- Lead needs to be covered or coated to prevent exposure
In conclusion, lead is the most economical choice of radiation shielding and is more flexible than tungsten.

Cutouts & Penetration Shielding Solutions

Major Sources Of Radiation Exposure During C
There are three types of ionizing radiation exposure sources: 1) direct exposure from the primary X-ray beam, 2) scattered radiation reflected from patient’s body or table, and 3) leakage from the X-ray tube . There is no danger of being exposed to the primary X-ray beam unless the operator places his or her hand in the X-ray irradiation area during the procedure. Furthermore, because the amount of leaking X-rays is not large, it does not substantially affect the practitioner. The major radiation exposure risk for most medical staff, including pain physicians, originates from scatter radiation . The primary X-ray beam produces scatter radiation, which interacts with the patient’s body in all directions. Thus, the major factor in radiation exposure is how close the operator is to the patient during the procedure . Usually, pain physicians tend to stand close to the patient and the X-ray tube. As a result, they are easily exposed to scatter radiation . Thus, scatter radiation is a significant concern for pain physicians during C-arm fluoroscopic procedures.

Picture a pool table. If its empty, striking a cue ball with a pool stick will easily send the ball to the other side of the pool table. Yet, if the table is full of other pool balls, even a very energetic strike will probably result in the cue ball hitting other balls, causing them to move while it reaches a standstill .
Thats how lead works: it is very dense, meaning its atoms are very close together, making it very hard for penetrating radiation to get across instead the radiation collides with the leads atoms, making them move around inside the metal while it loses its energy. A ray of radiation has very little chance of passing through.
Gamma radiation is that high-energy strike with the cue stick. Gamma rays get lost in the lead as they strike the leads atoms, and finally wind down, causing the lead atoms quite a lot of excitement but leaving lead-protected organs alone.

Gamma Radiation Shielding For Various Materials
How do we apply all this in order to get an approximate idea about gamma radiation shielding for various materials?
A halving thickness is the amount of material that will block half the gamma radiation passing through it. A halving thickness has a protection factor of 2.
If you add another halving thickness, the material will block half of the remaining gamma rays, leaving 1/4. This is a protection factor of 4. Another layer of halving thickness brings it down to 1/8, or PF 8. And so on.
A radiation shield is characterized by its total protection factor. For example, a shield that only lets 1/1,000 of the gamma rays through, has a protection factor of PF1000 .
1 layer = PF 29 layers = PF 51210 layers = PF 1024
Radiation shielding materials are commonly categorized by their halving thickness, which is the thickness of that material required to block half of the incoming gamma rays.
If we know the halving thickness, then multiply it by 10 for PF of about 1000 .
How To Protect Yourself From Gamma Radiation
As may be observed in the graphic below, less penetrating types of radiation emitted in a nuclear event are radiation particles . Alpha radiation particles, which are relatively slow, can be blocked by cloth. Beta radiation particles, which are smaller and faster, can be blocked by synthetic fabric , which cover the whole body. Of course, if alpha and beta radiation particles are ingested they can cause damage: Thus airways should be protected, even with a dust mask, and more effectively with a common respirator. Eyes and hands, too, should be protected . Yet the cause of acute radiation sickness is gamma radiation, which is the penetrating type of radiation emitted during a nuclear event.

Lead Drywall Product Details
MarShield starts with a piece of sheet lead which meets or exceeds Federal Specifications QQ-L-201F, Grade B, ASTM B-749-03, and Standard Specification for lead and lead alloy strip, sheet, and plate products. The lead sheet is 99.9% pure or better of un-pierced virgin lead, free of dross, oxide inclusions, scale, laminations, blisters and cracks and is factory laminated to drywall.
All of our leaded drywall product is furnished as type X fire code in 1/2 to 5/8 thickness with a lead thickness of 1/32 to 1/8 maximum thickness. The drywall conforms to ASTM C36 and Federal Specifications QQ-L-201 F, GRADE B, ASTM B-29. Pure lead sheet meeting Federal Specification QQ-L-201 F, Grade B and ASTM B749-03, Type L51121 is factory laminated under pressure to the back side of the drywall panel. Our lead drywall product meets U.S. and Canadian Safety Standards for 1 hour and 2 hour fire-rated partition applications.

How To Install Standard And Interlocking Lead Bricks
When installing lead bricks, the best method of installation is to have the bricks sandwiched between two rows of studs or steel tubing, or between a concrete wall and a row of studs. Installation of the lead bricks using this sandwich method enables conduit and cabling to be run without concern for cutting through the lead brick wall. In all cases, the design of the lead brick wall should not allow for any penetrations in the wall as this causes issues logistically, financially and with safety.
