Arm and shoulder pain and injuries are common.

How Is Radial Tunnel Syndrome Diagnosed

There are no formal imaging tests that can diagnose radial tunnel syndrome, which makes diagnosing this condition somewhat difficult. Even so, your doctor may order an X-ray, MRI or electromyography test, just to rule out other potential injuries or conditions.

Before examining your elbow and forearm, your doctor will ask you about your specific pain, your medical history and your symptoms. Then theyll try to find the exact point where the nerve is being compressed inside your radial tunnel by feeling around the outside of your elbow and applying light pressure. There are also two specific tests that your doctor may use to diagnose this condition, which include:

  • Physical exam: Your doctor will ask you to turn your palm from a palm down position to a palm up position against resistance. If you experience pain in your forearm, its likely a sign of radial tunnel syndrome. The second part of this test requires you to keep your middle finger straight against resistance. If its painful to do so, its also a sign of radial tunnel syndrome.
  • Rule of nine test: During this test, with your arm facing up and your elbow slightly flexed, your doctor will separate your elbow into nine equally sized areas, in three rows. Then theyll lightly apply pressure to each spot, asking you whether you feel pain, discomfort, or nothing at all. If you feel pain on the outermost spots of the top two rows, its likely a sign of radial tunnel syndrome.

When To Be Concerned About Shoulder Pain

It can take some time for shoulder pain to settle, perhaps weeks or months. In general, if your shoulder pain has not begun to settle in a week or two, or if it worsens over time, then it may be worthwhile seeing an experienced doctor or health practitioner.

If you find that you need stronger medication to manage your shoulder pain, discuss this with your doctor. You may need a referral to a specialist.

Note: Shoulder pain or discomfort around the front of one or both of the shoulders can be a sign of a heart attack. What Tests Are There

Blood tests arent usually needed for most shoulder problems, but theyre sometimes used to rule out other conditions, including some types of arthritis.

X-rays are good for looking for problems with the bones in your shoulder and minor changes in the joints. However, small changes are quite common and may not be the cause of your trouble.

X-rays can only show bones and other hard substances, but they wont show injuries to soft tissue like muscles.

An ultrasound scan can show swelling, as well as damage and problems with the tendons, muscles or other soft tissues in the shoulder. It uses high-frequency sound waves to examine and build pictures of the inside of the body.

You may be referred for magnetic resonance imaging scans if your doctor suspects a more complex problem with the soft tissue in your shoulder. An MRI uses radio waves to build a picture to show whats happening to the bones and soft tissue, such as the muscles and tendons, inside your shoulder.

Sometimes dye is injected into the shoulder before the MRI to get a clearer picture especially in cases of shoulder dislocation.

Nerve conduction studies can show whether your problems are being caused by the nerves in your arm being pinched or irritated.

They measure the electrical activity in the muscles and nerves. Its common to feel slight pain or discomfort, like a tapping on the skin, but the test doesnt last long.

What Are Some Of The Different Types Of Shoulder Problems


Common shoulder problems include the following:

  • Dislocation. The shoulder joint is the most frequently dislocated major joint of the body often caused by a significant force that separates the shoulder joint’s ball away from the joint’s socket .

  • The AC joint becomes separated when the ligaments attached to the collarbone are torn, or partially torn, away from the shoulder blade . Shoulder separation may be caused by a sudden, forceful blow to the shoulder, or as a result of a fall.
  • Bursitis. Bursitis often occurs when tendonitis and impingement syndrome cause inflammation of the bursa sacs that protect the shoulder.
  • Impingement syndrome. Impingement syndrome is caused by the excessive squeezing or rubbing of the rotator cuff and shoulder blade. The pain associated with the syndrome is a result of an inflamed bursa over the rotator cuff, and/or inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons, and/or calcium deposits in tendons due to wear and tear. Shoulder impingement syndrome can lead to a torn rotator cuff.
  • Fracture. A fracture is a partial or total crack or break through a bone that usually occurs due to a impact injury.

Test : Neck Stretching

This test will determine whether relieving tension on the nerve reduces or relieves your symptoms.

First, tilt your head to the side, so it does not cause discomfort. Hold your head in this position for a minute or two, stretching the neck muscle with your other arm.

Does this relieve your symptoms, including a reduced sense of numbing or warming sensation in the arm? If yes, move on to test 2.

Shoulder Impingement Or Painful Arc Syndrome

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that keep the upper arm bone held in the shoulder blade socket.

Pain from a problem with the rotator cuff is often called shoulder impingement. The condition causes swelling, pain or damage to the tendons of the rotator cuff. This can make it painful and difficult to move your arm properly.

You may find it painful and difficult to lift your arm away from your body, particularly if youre trying to lift your arm above your head. Your arm may feel weak or you may have a dull lingering pain in your upper arm.

Really, its nothing to do with your tendons being trapped by bones, as was previously thought. Instead, its caused by overuse or age-related problems with the tendons themselves but the name is still used. This condition can also be called painful arc syndrome.

Sometimes pain, swelling and difficulty moving your shoulder is caused by calcium crystals that form insidea tendon. Tendons are the strong cords that attach muscles to bones.
