Stage 3 Kidney Cancer Survival Rate

Brain Cancer Survival Rate

Despite the odds, stage IV kidney cancer patient is now cancer free

The average five-year relative survival rate for malignant brain tumors is 35.6 percent, according to the National Brain Tumor Society. This means that 35.6 percent of people who are diagnosed with brain cancer are still alive five years after their tumor is found.

Many factors affect survival following a brain cancer diagnosis, including:

For example, according to the American Cancer Society, the five-year relative survival rate by age bracket for glioblastoma, the most common type of primary malignant brain tumor, is:

  • 22 percent for people aged 20 to 44
  • 9 percent for people aged 45 to 54
  • 6 percent for people aged 55 to 64

This means that the younger you are, the higher the estimate of survival after five years. As a general rule, survival is longer with lower-grade brain tumors, but brain cancer survival data isnt often categorized by grade.

Its also important to keep in mind that survival estimates are just thatestimates. They are based on past data and older treatments. Advances continue to be made in medicine, and you should feel comfortable asking your care team to go over what these estimates mean for you, and what newer treatments may be appropriate for you.

How Does Kidney Cancer Stage Affect Prognosis

Your odds of cancer survivorship are better when you catch the disease early before it spreads. Doctors use the tumor, node, metastasis staging system to stage kidney cancer. Staging happens at the initial diagnosis and whenever cancer returns after treatment.

Kidney cancer that only affects a kidney responds well to treatments. Cancer that spreads to nearby lymph nodes or to other organs is more difficult to treat. For this reason, the survival rates are lower.

To determine cancer stage, your doctor assesses:

  • tumor size and growth

New Cases And Death Rates

For reasons that are not totally clear, the rate of new kidney cancers has been rising since the 1990s, although this seems to have leveled off in the past few years. Part of this rise was probably due to the use of newer imaging tests such as CT scans, which picked up some cancers that might never have been found otherwise. The death rates for these cancers have remained stable for many years.

Survival rates for people diagnosed with kidney cancer are discussed in Survival Rates for Kidney Cancer.

How Stage Affects Kidney Cancer Survival Rates

Impact of short warm ischemic time on longitudinal kidney function and ...

The stage of cancer not only helps your care team determine a treatment planit also helps predict a potential prognosis. This is done by calculating the percentage of people with kidney cancer who survive five years after diagnosis. Its important to remember that this is only a statistic based on all people with kidney cancer several years in the past, so individual statistics may vary.

The ACS estimates that about 79,000 new cases of kidney cancer may be diagnosed in 2022 in the United States. Survival numbers predict that 75 percent of these people will survive at least five years. However, the stage of cancer makes a difference. If the cancer hasnt grown outside the kidney, the five-year survival is 93 percent. For stage 4 kidney cancer, the five-year survival rate is much lower.

Its important to know that even with more advanced cancer, the five-year survival rate is based on the past five years and doesnt include new advances in clinical trials.

Combined Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors And Antiangiogenic Targeted Therapies

After immune checkpoint inhibitors and antiangiogenic targeted therapies were found to improve outcomes, clinical trials of the combination of these two approaches showed longer OS when compared with monotherapy.

Pembrolizumab plus axitinib

Evidence :

  • An open-label, phase III, randomized controlled trial compared sunitinib with the combination of pembrolizumab and axitinib. The study enrolled 861 patients who had received no previous systemic therapy for metastatic disease.
  • With median follow-up of 12.8 months, the 1-year OS rate was 90% in the pembrolizumab-plus-axitinib arm, compared with 78% in the sunitinib arm .
  • Median PFS was also prolonged for patients who received the combination therapy .
  • The objective response rate was 59.3% for patients who received combination therapy, compared with 35.7% for patients who received sunitinib .
  • Grade 3 or higher adverse event rates were similar: 75.8% of the patients in the pembrolizumab-plus-axitinib arm, compared with 70.6% of the patients in the sunitinib arm.
  • Pembrolizumab plus lenvatinib

    Evidence :

  • An open-label, phase III, randomized controlled trial compared sunitinib with either lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab or lenvatinib plus everolimus. The study enrolled 1,609 patients who had received no previous systemic therapy for metastatic disease.
  • The median PFS was also longer with pembrolizumab plus lenvatinib than with sunitinib . The PFS was also longer in the lenvatinib-plus-everolimus arm , compared with the sunitinib arm .
  • Stage 2 Kidney Cancer Survival Rate

As with stage 1, a stage 2 cancer kidney is likely to be removed and follow-up treatment may not be required. The five-year survival rate of stage 2 kidney cancer is 74 percent. This means that 74 out of 100 people diagnosed with stage 2 kidney cancer will live more than five years after diagnosis.

    Stage 3 Kidney cancer

There are two scenarios for third-stage renal cancer.

In the first scenario, the tumor became a major vein and a neighboring tissue but did not reach the neighboring lymph nodes.

In the second scenario, the tumor may be of any size and may occur outside the kidney. In this case, the cancer cells also invaded the adjacent lymph nodes but did not proceed further.

Let me introduce you, one of our patients Becky from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Becky is a 48-year-old, project manager in a reputed MNC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Backy is a father of 2 boys and a wonderful wife Lucy.

Three years back, Becky used to often felt tired while doing his daily routine work and also had lower back pain on one side. Becky went to the nearby doctor for a checkup and the doctor prescribed him some medicine and asked him to take some rest. Medicine lowered the pain but after some time the condition became the same.

One day Becky saw blood was coming out while he was urinating. He went to the hospital and met a urologist. The Urologist suggested doing a blood test, urine test, and ultrasound. Ultrasound reports detected an unusual lump in the kidney. The doctor suggested CT scan to Becky for further verification. Becky did the test and sadly, the tests confirmed that he had kidney cancer.

MedicoExperts patient care executive got in touch with Benny and Benny sent all the reports of his father to MedicoExperts to get the personalized treatment plan.

After completion of Chemotherapy, reevaluation was performed. The results were positive in favor of Becky.

    How Cancer Stage Affects Treatment

    Kidney Cancer Stages

The best treatment for kidney cancer depends on the stage, along with the patients general health. The most common options include:

    • Stage 1 kidney cancer treatment: At this stage, surgery is recommended to remove the part of the kidney with the tumor may be the most appropriate choice. This surgery is called a partial nephrectomy.
    • Stage 2 kidney cancer treatment: At this stage, the whole kidney may be removed. This surgery is called radical nephrectomy.
    • Stage 3 kidney cancer treatment: Some cancers may involve a radical nephrectomy to remove the affected kidney, lymph nodes and nearby cancer cells, as well as the adrenal gland and fatty tissue.
    • Stage 4 kidney cancer treatment: At this advanced stage, other treatment options separate from surgerysuch as targeted therapies or immunotherapymay be recommended.

    Tests To Confirm The Diagnosis

An ultrasound scan of the kidney can usually detect a kidney cancer. This is often one of the first tests done if your doctor suspects that you may have kidney cancer. An ultrasound scan is a safe and painless test which uses sound waves to create images of organs and structures inside your body. See the separate leaflet called Ultrasound Scan for more details. A more sophisticated scan called a computerised tomography scan may be used if there is doubt about the diagnosis.

What Is The Survival Rate For Kidney Cancer

Cancer survival rates are usually discussed in terms of 5-year relative survival, which refers to the proportion of patients still alive five years after diagnosis, compared to people in the general population who have not been diagnosed with cancer. Nationally, the 5-year relative survival for people diagnosed with kidney and renal pelvis cancer is 74.8%. Keep in mind that statistics like these are based on large groups of people and cannot predict what might happen with an individual patient.

Stage 1 Kidney Cancer Survival Rate

Figure 1 from Partial versus Radical Nephrectomy for T1

The five-year survival rate for stage one kidney cancer is 81 percent. This means that out of 100 people, 81 people diagnosed with stage 1 kidney cancer will live more than five years after their initial diagnosis.

Stage 2 is more severe than Stage 1. In this stage, the tumor is larger than seven centimeters in diameter but occurs only in the kidney.

What Is Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma, or ccRCC, is a type of kidney cancer. The kidneys are located on either side of the spine towards the lower back. The kidneys work by cleaning out waste products in the blood. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma is also called conventional renal cell carcinoma.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma is named after how the tumor looks under the microscope. The cells in the tumor look clear, like bubbles.

How Kidney Cancer Stages Are Determined

Kidney cancer stage is determined through diagnostic testing. Usually, imaging tests will be done to analyze the tumor or tumors within the kidney.

Imaging tests will also be done to identify metastasis in other areas of the body, including the lungs, brain, and bones. These tests may include CT scans, MRIs, a bone scan, and a chest CT or X-ray.

    Understanding Kidney Cancer Survival Rates

With five-year survival rates ranging from about 69 percent for regional forms of stage 4 kidney cancer to 12 percent for distant stage 4 cancer, its understandable to be alarmed about a stage 4 kidney cancer prognosis. However, its also important to understand that other factors are involved in these rates. For example, the American Cancer Society notes that treatments are improving all the time, so these numbers are likely to be better now than the last time statistics were documented. In addition, these rates only represent life expectancy for the cancer when its first diagnosed. Survival rates also tend to be better in general among younger, healthier people, who respond better to treatment, than among those who are older and more frail.

Other factors can also affect someones life expectancy with stage 4 kidney cancer. For example, people with high blood calcium levels, those with high blood lactate dehydrogenase levels and people with anemia may have a greater risk of fatality from stage 4 kidney cancer. Other risk factors include cancer that has spread to two or more distant sites or a cancer that needs treatment like targeted therapy, chemotherapy or immunotherapy less than a year after diagnosis.

    Stage 3 Kidney Cancer

When kidney cancer reaches stage 3, things get a little more complicated, and the cancer also becomes harder to treat. The tumor is now growing in the area outside the kidney.

    • Diagnosis: A diagnosis of stage 3 kidney cancer may occur if the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes but not nearby organs . The tumor can be any size, T1-T3, and still be considered stage 3 cancer. A stage 3 diagnosis also may be made if the tumor has not spread into other lymph nodes or organs but is large enough to have grown into a major vein or tissue surrounding the kidney .
    • Treatment: A combination of therapies may be used once kidney cancer reaches stage 3, notes the Mayo Clinic. Treatment typically begins with surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Then a combination of systemic therapies , such as immunotherapy and chemotherapy, may be used to help kill or prevent the growth and proliferation of any cancer cells remaining in the body.
    • Prognosis: According to the American Cancer Society, the survival rate for stage 3 cancer is lower than stages 1 and 2 but still fairly favorable. For regional forms of kidney cancer, which include all stage 3 cancers and some stage 4 cancers that have remained near the kidney, the 5-year survival rate is 69 percent.

    Early Stages Of Kidney Cancer

Once kidney cancer is confirmed, your medical team will determine the stage of the cancer. The stage is based on how much or how little the cancer has spread.

    • Stage 1 means the cancer is only in the kidney, and the tumor is 7 centimeters long or smaller.
    • Stage 2 means the cancer is still contained to the kidney, but the tumor is larger than 7 centimeters.

What Are The Signs Of Kidney Cancer

Currently, more than 50% of kidney cancers are detected incidentally and very few present with the classic symptoms, which include haematuria , flank pain and an abdominal mass.Approximately 30% of patients present with paraneoplastic conditions such as high calcium. In the most part, the diagnosis of renal cancer is made via CT or ultrasound scans.

Survival For All Stages Of Kidney Cancer

There are no overall UK-wide statistics available for different stages of kidney cancer. For people diagnosed with kidney cancer in England between 2013 and 2017:

    • around 80 out of every 100 survive their cancer for 1 year or more after they are diagnosed
    • around 65 out of every 100 survive their cancer for 5 years or more after they are diagnosed
    • more than 50 out of every 100 survive their cancer for 10 years or more after they are diagnosed

One and five year survival for kidney cancer for EnglandOffice for National Statistics, 2019

These statistics are for net survival. Net survival estimates the number of people who survive their cancer rather than calculating the number of people diagnosed with cancer who are still alive. In other words, it is the survival of cancer patients after taking into account that some people would have died from other causes if they had not had cancer.
